His parents are both masters, and he studied at Tonbridge School, in addition to training in acting with the National Youth Theater of Great Britain. At Emmanuel College of Cambridge, he studied English Literature and acted in numerous theatrical works carried out by his university during his years of study.

In August 2003, during one of his summer vacations, he traveled to Slovakia to film the 2004 miniseries, winner of two Emmy Awards, “Frankenstein”.

This version of William Shakespeare’s classic was directed by Peter Hall and, after his time in England, was taken on a tour of the United States, performing at Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York theaters.

Other important roles in his theatrical career include Claudio in “Much Ado About Nothing”, Marban and Maitland in “The Romans in Britain”, Nicky Lancaster in “The Vortex” and Peregrine in “Orley Farm”.

In May 2006 he starred in the lead role of Nick Guest, in the BBC miniseries “The Line of Beauty”. He then had to cast Lord Holmwood in the television movie “Dracula” and shortly after, it was Michael Faber in “Marple: Nemesis”, a telefilm based on a story by Agatha Christie. He also made the cast of “Maxwell,” a television drama about the famous media tycoon, in which his role was that of Basil Brookes.

In 2008 he was chosen to play Edward Ferrars in the television adaptation of “Sense & Sensibility”, a BBC production divided into three parts, which was adapted by Andrew Davies, with whom Dan had worked on “The Line of Beauty “.

A year later she debuted in front of the big screen to co-star in the biopic drama “Hilde”, about the life of German post-war artist Hildegard Knef. Her second feature was “Vamps” (2011), directed by Amy Heckerling and where she led the cast with Alicia Silverstone and Krysten Ritter.

Stevens play the role of Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey, a series written and directed by Julian Fellowes and set in the years leading up to the First World War.
