It will likely come as little surprise to hear that Ed Sheeran and Nicki Minaj have made headlines. According to the Daily Mail, Sheeran recently came under fire after allegations surfaced that he was using a ‘backing track’ during his festival-closing performance at Glastonbury.
Some audience members criticised Sheeran for his lack of a backing band and for ‘miming’ playing his guitar. Sheeran later retorted on Twitter that “everything I do in my live show is live, it’s a loop station, not a backing track. Please google x.” Sheeran didn’t appear to be overly concerned by the allegations, as he described his headlining experience as “a dream.” It was reported today that Gary Dunne, the man who claims to have taught Sheeran how to use a loop station, has confirmed that Sheeran was indeed using a loop station in his Glastonbury performance. Much like everything Sheeran does, this latest story has garnered quite a bit of attention, and it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
Though not quite the center of attention as the headliner, South London artist Stormzy used his Glastonbury performance as a platform to publicly chastise government officials for their role in the fire at Grenfell Tower two weeks ago. Stormzy, who wore a t-shirt bearing the word ‘Grenfell’ in the shape of the Tube insignia, exhorted “the authorities to tell the f—–g truth, and do something first and foremost. And we want the government to be held accountable. And we’re not going to stop until we get what we f—–g deserve.” His Glastonbury set may not have had an audience the size of Sheeran’s, but Stormzy’s performance will definitely be talked about for a long time.
Finally, Nicki Minaj did what she did best at last night’s NBA Awards show; namely, delivering a live performance designed to titillate the audience and name-drop her foes. Minaj, who most recently made headlines for her bitter feud with fellow hip-hop artist Remy Ma, performed a set with 2 Chainz. The set also included Minaj’s Remy Ma diss track ‘No Frauds,’ and the performance seems likely to reignite the feud between the two artists. Just another day of taking no prisoners for the self-proclaimed Queen of Hip-Hop.
