Wayne was born as Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. on September 27, 1982, and raised in the Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana. Carter was born when his mother, who was a cook, was 19 years old. His parents divorced when he was 2 years old, and his father left the family permanently. She enrolled in the Lafayette Elementary School Gifted Program and the Eleanor McMain High School Theater Club.

He wrote his first rap song at the age of eight. In the summer of 1991, he met Bryan Williams, the rapper, and owner of Cash Money Records. Carter recorded freestyle rap on Williams’ answering machine, which led him to frame the young Carter and include him in some songs distributed by Cash Money. He also recorded his first True Story collaboration album with rapper BG. At that time, Carter was 11, and B.G. Was 14 years old, and was announced as “Los BG’z”.

At age 13, he accidentally got himself shot with a 9mm caliber pistol, the bullet grazed his heart by two inches.
