Celebrity News: Xavier Gourmelon, the firefighter who pulled Lady Di from the shattered vehicle, told what she had experienced that night
It was firefighter Xavier Gourmelon who took Princess Diana from the Mercedes Benz that had been destroyed after a tragic accident at the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris.
Gourmelon, who was 30 years old on that fateful August 31, recounted what he had to live that fateful night and that, without knowing it, would mark a before and after in the contemporary history of the United Kingdom.
“We were very close to it and it took us less than three minutes to get there. My ten-man team was in two trucks and we were the first to arrive. The car was destroyed and we started to work like any other accident. We started to see who needed help and was alive, “said the firefighter.
It was at that moment that Xavier Gourmelon found a woman badly wounded.
“She, who I later learned was Princess Diana, was on the floor in the back, moving slowly and I could see that she was alive. I could see she had a slight injury to her right shoulder but, other than that, there was nothing significant. There was no blood on her at all,”Gourmelon recalled.
“I took her hand and told her to calm down, I was there to help her and put her on guard. She said, ‘My God, what happened?’ I gave her some oxygen, and my team and I were by her side It was very fast because we did not have to cut anything (from the Mercedes), “Gourmelon told The Sun.
However, Lady Di stopped breathing shortly. “We took her out of the car, put her on a stretcher. At that moment the doctor said she was in cardiac arrest, so we gave her CPR and after 20 seconds she regained consciousness. It was a relief because, as the first to respond, you want to save lives. It was what I thought I had done. ”
“I now know that there were serious internal wounds, but the whole episode often returns to my head.” And memories of that night will be with me forever. Placed in the ambulance told me it was her “. Xavier was in shock for a few seconds until he saw her again. “I recognized her there.”
The retired firefighter says that night will pursue him forever. “I can still see the whole scene” laments Gourmelon
